Restart
aka: snap start, thumb start, thumb wind, etc invented: antiquity
Winding a yoyo by hand is tedious and puts tension on the string, and it's a lot nicer when that's not necessary. Hence several varieties of restart have been developed to bypass hand winding.
Typically the yoyo will be returned to the hand or regenerated immediately after the restart, but a strong restart can give enough spin to allow execution of other tricks before the return.
The most common methods are the snap start (where the yoyo is held between the thumb and middle fingers and spun forward using a finger-snapping motion) and the thumb start (where the thumb is pushed down into the gap of the yoyo, causing it to spin rearward).
Other methods include, but are not limited to: - finger start (like the thumb start, but with two or more fingers) - palm start (yoyo is held in one hand and "brushed" with the other hand) - foot start (yoyo begins on the floor, then is stepped on) - crotch start (figure it out)
