In skateboarding, a grind is when the skateboard is moving but its weight is resting on something other than the wheels, such as the trucks or board itself.
Similarly, in yoyoing, a grind is when the yoyo is spinning but its weight is resting on something other than the string. Typically it will be the yoyoer's finger or palm, but it can be his arm, a pen, a *hat, or essentially anything else.
This can be a trick unto itself, or it can be used in order to directly manipulate the yoyo as a building block of a larger trick or combo. See also matador and hubstacks.
Additionally, with many modern yoyo designs it is possible to grind on the inner lip of the rim.
Although grinds as a concept had been around for some time prior and Steve Brown claims invention, JD is credited with much of the early development and popularization of grinds in 2003.
