Contrary to what might be the obvious interpretation of the name, the knuckle split is a maneuver in which a narrow (held by one finger) loop of string, perhaps with tension on it, is intercepted by a bent knuckle in such a way that it splits and widens, enabling various transformations. This can be useful for slack elements and complex string formations.

In its pure form it can be very awkward and difficult to control, and usage is uncommon; however, one can utilize the concept more easily in some situations by partially widening the loop with another finger.
