Contrary to what might be the obvious interpretation of the name, the knuckle split is a maneuver in which a narrow (held by one finger) loop of string, perhaps with tension on it, is intercepted by a bent knuckle in such a way that it splits and widens, enabling various transformations. This can be useful for [[slack]] elements and [[complexity | complex]] string formations.

In its pure form it can be very awkward and difficult to control, and usage is uncommon; however, one can utilize the concept more easily in some situations by partially widening the loop with another finger.
